Heavy paws created a silent swish in the grass. A gentle breeze whipped at the males' gray and white fur. Nothing stirred...not even the slightest skitter of a field mouse. Masquerade--named from the mask he seems to wear over his history and personality-- stopped, ears pricked. 'Alright. You're alone, and that's the way it'll always be. Suck it up and keep to yourself like you always do. There are other loners here, but you don't have to communicate with them.' A little voice cleared its way through his thoughts, blackening out all that was on his mind. A gentle growl ruptured deep in his throat, and, as if on cue, the breeze picked up before it died back down.
Shaking his head clear, he continued on without hesitation. Before long, boredom washed over him like a crashing wave. He sat down, sighing deeply with a hesitated look around. He grew still, just the gentle brush of his fur making him seem alive. Memories crashed down upon him.
'He was alone. Mom and dad were gone, the friends were too. Masquerade was left by himself..at only six months. He lifted his nose against the breeze, letting out a howl; overflowing sorrow. 'Gone!' He wails, eyes full of sadness and despair. 'Never did they care. Never did they once think I was good enough. His ears pricked an an answering howl.
The young male raced forward, appearing as just a blur among the browns and greens of the forest. What he hadn't heard, was the pain filling the howl, the blood gurgling behind it. The young pup skidded to a halt in the decaying leaves, teeth bared in a fierce snarl. A tan cat hovered over the motionless form of the gray and white fur of his father. His mother and friends cowered under the shelter of twisted tree roots.
'Go, my son! Don't stay! Turn around and run!' His mother had tried to warn him, but Masquerade never listened. He barked darkly, eyes flashing with anger. 'You killed him!' He snarls, racing forward. He crashed into the Bobcat, teeth grazing all hints of flesh that he could manage. The cat yowled in his ear, clawing at his shoulders, which only angered Mas more. He managed to roll on top of the bulky form, pinning it with his teeth sunk into its neck. The cat let out another fight before it weakened and its eyes dulled. He held on for a second more before slowly backing off, bleeding from multiple wounds. His dark gaze turned toward his mother, and the two he called friends.
'Leave. Go run like cowards with your tail between your legs. You leave me as if I am nothing, and you shall be nothing in turn. Go.' He growls, turns, and walks back the way he came....
Masquerade shook his head clear, not daring to continue with the memory. He looked out across the meadow, lost in thought.
