After the dismissal that afternoon, Shimo wandered to the lake, and looked at his reflection. His eyes were white, nearly devoid of a pupil. His earring had become tarnished... and wings... Tsubasa's wings. He'd promised to take good care of them, and to keep living on... now they were bruised and scared and bloody from his few attempts at a landing. What am I doing here? My power is gone... I can't absorb information like I used to... but I'm alive... my power... "Power... tsch..." He sneered, "It's magic that started all this. Mar was in pain for so long because of my 'power', and now his brother is dead, and everything he was has been swept away. Tsuki and Kage can never be free of their curse. All magic has brought us is trouble, pain, and death... what good is it?" He lay by the waters' edge, contemplating such things.

As Daisuke came through the trees, he nearly stopped and turned around when he saw Shimo on the bank of the lake. He hesitated for a moment, not knowing what he would say to his leaving, then continued walking. He walked past Shimo, not looking at him, and said but two words. Words that would either begin another conversation, or end them permanently.
Goodbye Shimo.

Shimo nodded, staring across the water at the opposite shore. "So... you're taking your leave now? If you don't mind staying to talk for a while, I'd like to know why. I still haven't made up my mind..." His gaze drifted down to his reflection. "I haven't made up my mind yet..."

He sighed, knowing that he would have wanted to know why, but he was caught off-guard when he heard that he was thinking about leaving. He walked around the lake and sat down beside him, looking into the water as well.
My sisters are joining separate packs and there's no way I could protect them or enjoy their company at once. I'm a natural tracker, so I'll make sure they don't get into trouble, but I can't choose between them. Why would you leave Shimo? You aren't torn between anything I can see and it seems like everyone likes you.

He almost wanted to laugh. "Not torn between anything..." Shimo repeated absent-mindedly, "I suppose you're right. But so far I've only caused pain to the people I care about. Tsubasa is dead, Mar's entire history was wiped out, and before that I made him go blind and completely screwed up his brain. I've lost my sight once, and fused a foreign object into Wahya's neck. Tsuki... well, I haven't done much to Tsuki, but now I'm completely powerless to help him and his brother. Even when I try, I just get in the way. All I do is cause pain." He faked a smile and looked for a subject change, "Anyway, why choose between your sisters? You love them both, so just do a time-share; spend a season at a time in each territory, if the alphas will have you. It's better than not seeing either one, isn't it?"

Daisuke listened to Shimo and wondered what in the world he was talking about. Sure he'd screwed up some, but he'd also done a lot of good.
Okay, so I'll grant you a few screw-ups. But if Tsubasa's wings hadn't fused to you then you wouldn't have been able to help Hitoban in getting Mar back, would you? Or if you hadn't been there to amplify Dawn's moon thing Tsuki and Kage could be dead right now. Or at least Kage. And it was Mar's choice to give his "life", not yours. So don't think that you're a complete nuisance to everyone because you're not. Just look at Wahya: they're all under constant threat of Giga...well maybe not anymore...but they still care about him. They still want him around. You don't see Hitoban chasing him out of her lands, baring her teeth, do you? No, you don't. That means you will be treated with the same hospitality, no matter what you do. You have your moments where you screw up, but they pass and then you're more helpful than anyone else.
Daisuke thought about what he had said about seasons. That would make him feel like they were his divorced parents...Finally it struck him. He shook his head and gave Shimo a small smile.
No, I couldn't do that. I think I'm going to go and start my own pack. One that I'm the Alpha of. Find a mate and then maybe one day my sisters will tire of their packs and come to live in mine. Perhaps they could retire there or something. At least this way they would always have a home to come to. Just in case.
Daisuke knew all too well how quickly things could go from good to bad in a pack. The Alpha could go power mad, something could come along and kill everything, fire could destroy every bit of shelter, and all sorts of other things. His pack would be a safe haven for them. So with his parting words, Daisuke stood and smiled at Shimo.
Think about what I said Shimo. I'm off to make my future.
He turned and ran off, leaving naught but a trail of tracks in the soft sane behind him.

Shimo stared at the tracks for a while, thinking about that word... "Future"... he wondered what such a thing would be like for him now. Helpful? Perhaps... even if he hadn't been, he could do something about it now. "Yeah! I made a promise!" He said out loud, "I'm going to make my own future, too!" With that, he walked slowly back... home.
