Sound asleep, Dawn lay with her pups, enjoying the peace, but not quite at ease. Kage wasn't around, and she was alone. Of course, there were people in the grotto, Maname, Neo, Shimo, but she was still alone with her pups. Her back was to the entrance to the nursery, physically shielding the pups, as she was used to doing instinctively. She woke with a start when she heard the grumblings of a bear, too early woken from his long winter sleep. He had somehow found his way into the den and was stumbling around blearily. On her feet in a second, Dawn woke her pups and sent them to the farthest corner of the nursery, away from the door. She padded out into the main den, and there he was, a black bear larger than her, but small and weakened from his sleep. She snarled at him, and he turned, surprised, to look at her. Through his famished eyes, she could only look like one thing: food. He charged at her, lumbering like the great stupid beast he was, and she ducked under him, biting into his underbelly as he went. He tumbled to the floor, bellowing in pain, and had some trouble getting up.
With all the noise, Dawn failed to notice Hikaru inching his way toward the massive beast's nose. His tail was wagging, as if it was some kind of plaything. Dusk was hanging back at the door, instinctively keeping Tomoshibi and Kazuko behind him, while calling anxiously to Hikaru. When the bear quieted down enough for Dawn to hear the soft whimpering and barks coming from the pups, the bear had heard them as well. He roared at Hikaru, who was very much too close to the jaws to be safe, and stumbled toward him, kind of crawling.
"Get back!" Dawn barked over the roars, her stomach twisting into knots with fear for her babies. As if possessed by a demon of her own, she transformed into a killing machine. She leapt at the bear, teeth bared, and landed on the back of his neck. She grabbed hold of his scruff and jumped back, pulling him with her. It was enough for Dusk to jump forward and grab Hikaru before he could join in the "fun," and usher them all back to where their mother had put them. Dawn landed on the floor, nearly letting go of the beast when her skull slammed on the floor, and when the bear landed on her hind legs. She struggled out from underneath him and attacked his underside. She jumped onto his stomach and ripped at his throat, digging at his chest like a patch of soft earth. In his struggle to survive, he clipped the side of Dawn's face, leaving three medium-sized bloody gashes. However, once she reached the important parts of his body-vital organs, he died almost silently.
Once she was completely certain he was dead, and not just faking or passed out-she made sure of this by ripping out his jugular and tearing open his chest cavity and shredding his heart and lungs-Dawn limped off of the bear and shook out her fur. She was panting hard and quite dizzy, but none of her pups were hurt, and that was what was important. She limped over to the nursery, and as soon as her head appeared in the doorway, the pups rushed over to her. She collapsed with relief and exhaustion halfway in the doorway, and wearily licked at her pups. They soon realized that she wasn't quite okay, and began licking at the wounds on her face, and asking "Mommy?" to try and get a response. She struggled to stay awake so they wouldn't be too concerned, and responded as well as she could to their questioning half-sentences.
